8-Ball

In 8-Ball, “U Rack We Run” (Wes Hotaling) and “No Clue” (Cindy Dominy) tied for first place with 26 points each. “No Clue” won the tiebreaker by defeating Wes’ team 6-4 over the regular season. Third place was claimed in an unlikely fashion; “Quick Sticks” (Dave Wallace) took third by 1 point after defeating “Home Team” (Ed Skawinski) 4-1, with “Blue’s Cues” (John Robinson) losing all 5 matches in the final week. “Blue’s Cues” was lucky in cpaturing the wild card draw.

In the first round of 8-Ball playoffs, “U Rack We Run” defeated “Quick Sticks” 3-1.

9-Ball

“Blue’s Cues” scored 505 points to win first place in Sunday night 9-Ball play. “Pool Nutz” (Frank Bogardus) snuck into 2nd place with 493 points. Cindy’s “No Clue” placed 3rd, while a very happy “Quick Sticks” (Dave Wallace) were the wild card draw.

First round of 9-Ball playoffs:

“Blue’s Cues” vs. “Quick Sticks”

“Pool Nutz” vs. “No Clue” (date TBD, since “No Clue” is in Las Vegas)

Anne and Chris got the better of Mike and John in the APA Scotch Doubles Tournament held Saturday, August 9 at Diamond Eight. It was a fun day as both current and potential APA members squared off in the modified single elimination scotch doubles format (team members alernate shots, not turns, and every team is guaranteed to play at least 2 matches).

Ten teams came out for the event, which encouraged current members to bring guests who had never participated in the APA. These “new-to-the-APA” players had a great time and we hope to see them all in league play in the near future! More photos and info after the link.

Special thanks to our new league operator, Steve Blaney, for running a great tournament. It was fun! If you are interested in joining the APA or are a current member and know some people who may be interested, please contact the APA of Greater Albany or stop by Diamond Eight for more info!

The APA of Greater Albany will hold a Member/Guest 8-Ball tournament on Saturday, August 9th at 1pm at Diamond Eight. This is a partners tournament in the Scotch Doubles format. In this format, team members alternate shots, not turns. (For example, Abbey breaks and makes the 7-ball. It is now her partner Bill’s turn. Bill shoots and pockets the 5-ball. Now it is Abbey’s turn again.)

Members are encouraged to bring a non-member or an inactive member to participate. The entry fee is $15 per team, plus $5 greens fee for each player. It is a fun format, as many of the APA members know, and it really levels the playing field.

There will be 100% cash payback for 25% of the field!

This is a great opportunity to either get a friend introduced to the APA or, if you are not yet a member, get introduced to the APA and experience the fun! Ask a friend or co-worker to join you!

For more information, call Steve (the league operator) at 518-708-9567 or Diamond Eight at 518-786-8048.

Tournament starts at 1pm; free practice at Noon!

Our 8th Annual Edward M. Skawinski Memorial Golf Tournament was another great success! Special thanks to everyone who participated. Sixty-four golfers had great fun at the Fairways of Halfmoon, even though it threatened to rain all morning. Dave Tailon and his group took home this year’s trophies, shooting 8-under par. Tim Goman led his team to a second place finish at 7-under while John Calereso’s men finished third at 5-under. In last place, for the third (or fourth?) year in a row, was Greg Stroyen’s golf buddies. They shot 14-over but had a blast while tearing up the golf course.

More news and lots of photos from the day will be posted in a few days. Thanks again for your support!
